What to Know Before Shopping for Toddler Beds?

The idea of having a lovely bed for your little one can be enticing. But before you drive to the store or press that check-out button, there are a few practical considerations you might want to look into.

Bed size: As mentioned above, toddler beds are mostly the same size as a standard crib. You won’t be buying a new mattress. But there are bigger models out there.

Room: Keep in mind the floor space available in the nursery when purchasing one. Some models require a relatively high ceiling as well.

Your kid’s age: Ensure that your kid is not already too tall for a kiddy bed. There is also a recommended minimum age for a toddler to use a bed.

Years of use: A 3-in-1 crib is also a good option. You can transform it from a crib into a bed. And then remove the rails for a daybed. In this way, you can make the most of your purchase.

You won’t be tucking the crib away. It will help you to save space.

When Should Kids Transition into Toddler Beds?

My kid transitioned at two years of age. But not all kids are the same. You can make the shift between 18 months to 4 years of age.

Some situations might suggest moving from the crib to a toddler bed. Watch out for these 4 signs and circumstances:

1- Escape attempts

Your kid might already be an adept escape artist. At 3 feet tall, it becomes easier for them to climb over. I’d highly suggest transitioning to a toddler bed. You don’t want your kid falling over the rail during an escape attempt.

2- New baby coming

Your newborn will need the crib for himself. Your older kid will be at least a year old by then. Getting him a toddler bed might be the perfect solution to this. With the crib beside your bed, your older kid can start training to sleep on his new bed.

3- Potty training

Let your little one come in and out of her bed. If your kid can go to the toilet on her own during day time, you can complete her training by allowing her to use the potty even at night.

4- Early bird

Does your kid wake up too early in the morning? With your kid-free to get out of bed, you won’t only save her from frustration. You will also allow yourself to get that well-deserved snooze. Just make sure that the room is baby-proofed.

Experts advise waiting for as long as possible before making the shift. The only transition is when you’ve observed your kid is ready, or it’s become necessary. Should you decide to put your kid on a toddler bed, make sure that the room is safe for him to roam around.

For more information on crib transition, check out my article about the best time to transition your child from crib to toddler’s bed!

What Should I Look for in a Toddler Bed?

There might be a variety of models and designs out there. But all beds must provide comfort and safety to your little sleeper. When shopping for a toddler bed, ask yourself these questions:

How safe is a toddler’s bed?

Rolling off the bed is risky for younger kids. Choose a bed with built-in guardrails to secure your little one on the bed. The slats should not be wider than 2-3/8 inches (6 centimeters) to prevent him from getting trapped in between.

For adjustable safety rails, there should be no small corners where tiny fingers can get caught. The bed should also have no loose parts such as screws and bolts that might become choking hazards. Make sure that there are no protruding or pointy edges that can hurt your kid as well.

Materials for the bed should be free from toxic elements like phthalates, latex, and lead.

Look for Greenguard Gold certification when buying toddler beds and other kiddy products. Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) also provides accreditation for products meeting or exceeding federal safety standards.

What’s the weight capacity of a toddler’s bed?

Most toddler beds can support up to 20 pounds or around 20 kilograms. Make sure to track your kid’s growth regularly. They grow up fast. You wouldn’t want the bed crashing under your not-so-little one anymore.

How to Choose a Toddler Bed?

Toddler bed

Safety and comfort are the two main factors to consider when choosing the best toddler bed for your kid. So the features you should look for must focus on them.

A toddler bed is also not suitable for everyone. Make sure your kid meets the requirements before putting him on one.

Most parents’ concern revolves around the appropriateness of a toddler bed to their kids’ age. Below are the most asked questions and their answer. Please, check them out.

What age is a toddler bed for?

I suggest waiting until your kid is at least 18 months old. As long as he can walk and climb safely on his own, he should be fine. A convertible crib is also a good option if you want to save money. There are 4-in-1 cribs that you can easily extend for taller kids. Your child will be using this model beyond his toddler years.

Other parents find the expense with toddler beds unnecessary. So they skip the kiddy bed for a twin-size one. It’s their choice. But I believe adult-size beds are still too big and too high for younger kids. A toddler bed is an excellent middle ground between the crib and an adult bed. I’m planning to let my kid sleep in his bed until he’s five or six. By then, he’ll be tall enough to climb in and out of a bigger bed safely.

What type of bed should a one-year-old sleep in?

The crib is the safest place to sleep in for toddlers below two years.

Always follow safety practices. Make the bed as simplistic as possible. No extra blankets and pillows in the crib as they can pose suffocation risks. A onesie pajama should be a safe option to keep your toddler warm.

Avoid putting stuffed toys in the crib as well. Your little one can use it to try climbing over the rail. If your kid can’t support his weight yet, he might fall over and hurt himself.

What kind of bed should a two-year-old have?

If keeping him in the crib poses no serious concern, then you should let him use the crib for a few months more. But if he keeps proving his ninja skills climbing over the rail with the finesse of a gymnast, then a toddler bed should be a better place for him to sleep.

Just make sure that the bed is close enough to the floor for him to climb in and out safely. Guardrails are also a must-have for a toddler this young. Rolling over the bed can still seriously hurt him.

Can a five-year-old sleep in a toddler bed?

Younger children will sleep better in a toddler bed. As long as your five-year-old is not too tall for the bed, she should be fine in it. Remember that a toddler bed usually is the same dimensions as a standard crib, at 28 inches (71 cm) in width and 52 inches (133 cm) inches in length. If her feet or head keeps brushing off the headboard, she’s already too tall. Consider getting a bigger bed then.

Check the bed’s weight capacity as well. If your kid is beyond the limit, it’s better not to risk it.

What size bed is best for my toddler?

Younger and smaller toddlers are better in smaller beds. From one to around two years of age, the crib should suffice.

Toddlers and parents struggle to move to a bed because young ones are too unfamiliar with the new sleeping arrangement. If you transition your little one from a crib straight to a twin or broader bed, he’s more likely to reject it. Since he’s used to the confines of the crib, he might find the extra space intimidating.

The toddler bed is not as drastic an upgrade. You can even use the old crib mattress and sheets so he won’t be unfamiliar.

However, slightly older kids will appreciate an extra bed space to move around.

4 different toddler bed mattress sizes

Though toddler bed sizes are primarily standardized, there are bigger options that require size mattresses. Here are the mattress sizes that might work for you and your kid.

1- Toddler

The standard size for a toddler bed is 28 inches (71 cm) in width and 52 inches (133 cm) inches in length; it is best for kids at least 18 months old up to 4 years.

2- Twin-size

Twin-size beds are perfect for older kids and teenagers. Its dimensions measure 38 by 75 inches. Toddlers might shy away from sleeping on a bed this size. If ever you choose this to transition from the crib, gradually introduce your kid to it. You can let him take naps on this bigger bed in the daytime. After a week or so, you can try putting him here at night. It might help to bring with him a blanket from his old crib.

3- Full-size

A full-size bed is slightly a larger option. It measures 52 by 75 inches. Bed like these are roomier for a teenager. But if your kid has a growth spurt, you don’t have to wait for him to turn a certain age. A tall 8-year-old will be more suitable in a full-size bed.

Some parents opt for a full-size bed for their toddlers. It has enough space for snuggling or storytelling before bed.

Waking from a nightmare is also a common occurrence with little ones. If you have a full-size bed, it’ll be easier to squeeze in and comfort your child.

4- Queen size

The queen size bed measures around 60 by 80 inches. This bed is commonly used in rooms with ample enough space for its dimensions.

With so much room, this bed is perfect for snuggling with both parents and children.

For toddlers, a bed this size can also be built as a playpen.

Uncertain about which mattress to get? Take a look at this list of the best toddler mattresses. I have put lots of hours into this guide, and you’ll find the ideal crib mattress for your toddler!

Should I buy a toddler bed with a mattress included?

Check first if the toddler bed can fit the dimensions of the old crib mattress. Unless you’re vacating the crib for a new baby, you wouldn’t want to spend money on just the same mattress.

Otherwise, when buying a toddler bed, it’s best to purchase the mattress that comes with it. Or at least get one at the same store so you can check if it fits into the bed frame.

Why are toddler beds necessary?

Some parents would say toddler beds are a waste of money. They skip the kiddy bed and let their child adapt to an adult bed. It’s understandable. Why spend on something their child will outgrow in two to three years?

The thing is, adult beds are made for grown people. Toddlers have particular situations only a toddler bed is designed to address.

Meanwhile, other parents prefer keeping their little ones in the confines of the crib even when the kids are already too big for it.

Parents have practical reasons why they don’t want a toddler bed. I don’t blame them.

If this makes you unsure, let’s look at the benefits of having a toddler bed.

Toddler beds are safer

These beds are built closer to the floor. Some models even have bedframes sitting directly on the floor. Toddlers can harmlessly climb in and out of these beds.

A common safety feature most toddler beds have is guardrails. Children are notorious for being active sleepers. The rails will help secure them in bed even if they toss and roll in their sleep.

If ever they slip or fall off a toddler bed, it won’t be a big deal. However, a kid can get seriously hurt if she falls off an adult bed.

Comfortable transition

A sudden change from a small crib to a big bed might intimidate your little one. Toddler beds, on the other hand, prepare your child for a grown-up bed with less stress.

Your child won’t feel alienated by retaining the same crib measurement and the rails close to the sides. At the same time, it brings them the independence that comes with sleeping on an adult bed.

Easier for toddlers and parents

Your kid can come in and out of bed on his own. He won’t have to depend on you to ‘free’ him. In the morning, you can sleep a few more minutes since your kid won’t be crying out to you.

Potty training comes easily in this setup. Your kid can go to the potty whenever he needs to.

Toddler beds foster independence in your child. In a way, he is also being trained for the bigger world.

What features should I look for in a bed?

Nail the right bed size for your kid first. Next, you have to consider the overall situation in your nursery. How much space does the bed need? Do you have enough storage space for your kiddy stuff? And what type of materials can your budget afford?

Here are the 6 popular features that can address your given situation.

1- Floor bed

When it comes to height, a floor bed is the safest. Its bedframe sits directly on the floor. If ever your kid roll over the edge, he won’t be seriously hurt.

2- Montessori bed

Virtually it is the same as the floor bed. A Montessori style is a holistic approach to setting up the nursery. It’s not just the bed that is close to the floor. The rest of your child’s stuff is also intended to be within his reach.

The main principle here is giving your child ‘freedom within limits. This approach aims to provide your child with independence. He is trained to know his body’s need for sleep and potty time. You won’t have to put him in and out of bed.

A Montessori bed is an excellent option if you want you and your child to have more time to do your things.

3- Guardrails

Even with the bed close to the floor, you might still need this feature. It can be embarrassing for your child to roll off his bed and wake up on the floor. Secure your child in his sleep with safety rails.

If you’ve bought a bed without rails and decided that you need it, you can purchase an attachable one. Just make sure to install it properly so it won’t come loose. Also, observe the safety standard with the gap between the slats. Your kid’s head or shoulder should not be able to fit into them.

4- Slide

Level up the bedroom fun. With a slide, your kid is sure to wake up with a smile.

This feature usually comes with a loft bed or a bunk bed. The bed will surely take up more space. Make sure you have plenty of floor space in the nursery for a slide.

5- Storage

A toddler bed with underneath storage is a practical solution to the amount of kiddy stuff that’s sure to accumulate.

Tuck in those extra sheets, blankets, books, and toys safely in the drawers.

6- Trundle

Having an extra bed that you can pull in and out will come in handy. If you have relatives visiting with their kids, the little ones can sleep oversleep over in your nursery.

9 types of toddler’s beds

Nurseries come in different shapes and sizes. And so make toddler beds. Check out the list below for your options.

1- Convertible

A convertible is a terrific investment. It’s a bed that will see your kid through toddlerhood, grade school, or even high school.

A 3-in-1 crib can be transformed into a toddler bed and then later as a day bed. A 4-in-1 adds another form and completes the transformation into a full-size adult bed.

2- Platform bed

A platform bed brings the mattress closest to the floor. It does leave a few inches of a gap underneath. This makes a platform bed accessible to your little one while allowing the mattress to breathe and cool off.

Platform beds also don’t require a box spring for support, saving you the money.

3- Daybed

A daybed is versatile nursery furniture. Your kid can use it for sleeping at night and lounging during the day. It should be small enough not to take that much space. Having a cute little bed on one side of the bedroom will also be lovely to look at.

4- Captain bed

It is the final solution to your kiddy storage problem. A captain bed has built-in drawers or a cabinet and sometimes shelves underneath.

Kids’ rooms are often relatively small, while little ones aren’t known for being organized. With all the storage spaces a captain bed can bring, it’ll be easier to tidy the nursery up without bringing in additional boxes or cabinets.

5- House bed

It is children’s biggest pet peeve sleep. But with a house-themed bed, it’ll be easier to invite the little ones for a good night’s sleep or a quick nap. Most models have poles and beam your kid can safely climb. So the bed can also function as a small play area with a mattress to catch them.

6- Playhouse

Keep your little one in one safe place. With the bed and play area in one room, you won’t be chasing your plucky toddler around the house or the backyard anymore.

It’s not just a simple house bed. These models simulate the exterior of real-life houses, encouraging your kid to play.

7- Tent bed

If you think you are raising a scout or an adventurer, then a tent bed will be a fantastic choice. It’s just what the name implies. It’s a bed with a tent for a cover. And it’s not just for the looks. The tent helps keep the bed warm, perfect for colder regions.

Some models simulate real-life tents. But there are others with more colorful and creative options. You can even purchase a variety of covers to keep your kid entertained.

8- Loft bed

Is your nursery short in floor space? Then a loft bed might be an excellent solution.

A loft bed is raised a few feet from the floor. You can use the space below for storage or a wardrobe. It can also turn into a play area. If you have another kid moving into the room, you can put a small bed in the extra space as well.

9- Bunk bed

Not all household has the luxury of space. If you have a couple of kiddos moving into the nursery, a bunk bed is a great option.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

To prevent loft and bunk bed accidents, always keep in mind these safety reminders:

  • Children below six years old should never sleep on the upper bunk or a loft bed, even with guardrails.
  • Assemble the bunk and loft bed correctly
  • Secure the cross ties under the mattress
  • Discourage your kids from rough play on the upper bunk or loft
  • If possible, put a night light so your child can see the ladder.

Different Toddler’s Bed Styles

No matter your nursery’s aesthetic needs, there is always a model for your kid. Starting with materials, you can choose among solid wood, metal, plastic, or particle boards. Some even come with upholstery.

Let’s take a look at these 4 options.

1- Particleboard

If you’re on a budget, a toddler bed of this material might work for you. It’s the cheapest but also the least sturdy. Anyway, if you don’t plan to reuse this bed once your kid moves on to an adult-size one, it won’t hurt to get rid of it.

2- Plastic

For a lightweight and easy-to-clean bed, go for one made of plastic. It’s also relatively cheap.

Most plastic toddler beds come in novel designs. Popular today are car-shaped beds.

3- Metal

Metal is the second-best material. It’s lighter than wood and is easier to assemble. It’s not as elegant as solid wood, but metal beds can easily fit various nursery designs.

4- Solid wood

Wood is the most elegant material for a toddler bed. It’s also the sturdiest. Consequently, solid wood beds are the most expensive.

It’s an excellent investment, though. A bed with a wooden frame is sure to last many years. If you’re planning to have more than one kid, this material is your best option.
