Round Crib Pros and Cons

Because round and oval cribs are not that common, many parents are wondering if they should buy a round crib or stay away from it. Sure, their design is different, but they mostly hold the same advantages and disadvantages as the rectangle cribs.

To begin, here are the 7 main advantages of round cribs:

1- Fantastic design

The reason why round cribs are trendy is that they create a bold statement in any nursery decor. Sure, you can find plenty of fabulous-looking rectangle cribs. Still, round cribs really have the power to enhance the design of your baby’s room.

Cribs with rounded edges have a unique aesthetic and become the centerpiece of a nursery. They are not your usual pieces of furniture, round crib are genuinely unique.

The fantastic design of a round crib is definitely an advantage compared to the traditional baby crib.

2- No sharp edges

When kids start to stand up and learn to walk, sharp corners on furniture become their worst enemies. Most parents are protecting their children by installing padding and bumpers on those sharp corners.

However, with the round and oval cribs, you won’t have to worry about your baby bumping his head against the sharps edges of the crib.

3- Easy access to your child

You are less likely to place a round crib against the wall or the nursery corner. Therefore, you’ll be able to put and lift your child from the crib more easily. Also, because of the rounded edge, it’s easier to reach for your baby inside the crib.

Moreover, you’ll have a 360-degree view of your little angle!

4- More comfortable to lean over

With a traditional rectangle crib, reaching into the crib to lay your child can be uncomfortable. This is especially true when your baby moves a lot in his sleep or simply likes to roll around his crib. Leaning over a sharp corner and pressing the pointy edge against your body is enormously uncomfortable. You won’t have this issue with a round crib, so that’s another benefit of round cribs!

5- Easily move around the house

Round cribs are usually lighter than rectangular cribs, making it easier to move around the house. Get a round crib with wheels, and you’ll have the perfect portable crib. Your baby could sleep at night in the bedroom and nap in the living room in the afternoon.

6- Round crib takes less space

Generally, a round crib is more compact and takes less floor space than a rectangle crib. This is a great advantage when you have a small nursery or simply appreciate having more space around the room.

If you are planning on having another baby, or if your kids are sharing the bedroom, a round crib can be the space saver you are looking for.

7- More room organization possibility

Also, because of the round shape, such cribs almost fit anywhere in a room. You can place it against the wall, in a corner or in the middle of the room, and you’re sure it will look fantastic everywhere.

Disadvantages of round cribs

The following “disadvantages” are more or less significant depending on your needs, but I had to point them out.

Budget: You won’t find as many round crib options as rectangle cribs. Therefore, you might fall in love with the design of a round crib that is a bit more than what you expect to pay. Also, I found fewer round cribs in the lower price range for a baby crib.

Less mattress and bedding options: Because of its unique shape, you’ll have fewer options. This doesn’t mean it’s too difficult to find, there are simply fewer options available. As for the mattress, some manufacturer sells their round crib with the mattress included.

Otherwise, they are pretty similar to a traditional baby crib.

Round Crib Vs. Traditional Rectangle Crib

Baby in oval crib

Because the rectangle is the traditional shape for a baby crib, they are also the most popular. Rectangle cribs come in more sizes and styles. While round cribs are available in fewer options.

The installation of a round crib might seem more complicated than with a traditional crib, but it’s basically the same thing. Just follow the installation guide, and you’ll be alright.

While researching for this article, I stumbled on the same unfounded negative comment about round cribs. Parents were assuming that a round crib won’t last long, and the kid outgrows them fast. It’s the same principle for rectangle and round cribs; if you don’t get the convertible option, you’ll have to get a new bed for when your baby becomes a toddler. Many round cribs can convert into a toddler’s bed, lasting up to 8-10 years.

The only major difference is the mattress and bedding. Round and oval cribs need a particular type of mattress and bedsheets. If you plan on having a round crib, please advise your friends and family of your choice. Just in case they planned on offering you bedding as a present for your new baby.

Round vs. oval crib

Round baby crib

The shape of a round and oval crib is very similar, and both are sometimes used to describe the same crib.

A true round crib is a shape with a perfect circle. On the other hand, an oval crib as rounded sides has a flat front and back panels.

The perfect round crib is generally more of a bassinet than a baby crib. Basinnet is a special bed made for newborn babies, while a crib is meant for young infants (aged up to 2 years old).

In the oval crib department, there are various convertible options. Such convertible cribs are perfect for toddlers because they keep the same bed but with minor modifications. For example, the mattress is lowered to the ground, and the front railing is removed. Therefore your little explorer can climb in and out of bed without the risk of falling over the crib railing.

Let’s keep it simple and call them rounded cribs. Both variations are equally very satisfying to shop for 😉

Things to Consider When Buying a Rounded Crib

Just like any other type of kid’s bed, round cribs come in various styles and colors. You’ll get to choose between a wooden crib or one with a metal railing. Also, the convertible cribs offer good value over time. Besides the aesthetic of the cribs here are other things to consider when shopping for a round crib.

How much room space is available?

This might sound obvious, but you should plan ahead and know exactly where you want the crib. When mapping a room, I like to use painter’s tape to outline a piece of furniture’s possible location.

How to assemble a round crib?

When installing a crib, you need to make sure you have enough space in that room.

Also, it’s better to assemble the crib inside the room where it should be to avoid unpleasant surprises. Because it’s possible that once assembled, the crib won’t pass through the doorway. If you must move the crib from one room to another, double-check the measurement from the crib and your doorway before completing the purchase.

As for the installation itself, assembling a round crib is not more or less complicated than any other type of crib. Just make sure you have the proper tools and enough floor space, and follow the instruction!

Are round cribs safe?

Round cribs are manufactured with the same safety guidelines as traditional rectangle cribs. This is why it’s crucial to get a new crib that is being built according to the highest safety standards. I wouldn’t recommend buying a real antique oval crib because your baby’s safety is more important than the authenticity of the vintage decor you’re trying to achieve.

As for the crib’s structure, round cribs are made with the same sturdy material as any other modern crib. The round cribs listed above are all certified and safe for your baby. Buying a new and certified crib procures the much-needed peace of mind to let your precious baby sleep without your constant supervision.

How long can a baby sleep in a round crib?

In general, babies sleep in a crib until they are 18-24 months old. After 2 years, the safety railing and the height of the mattress become severe falling hazards. Therefore, you need to get a toddler’s adapted bed. This is where you’ll save money by purchasing a convertible crib. This type of crib converts into a toddler’s bed when needed. You’ll keep the same mattress for the toddler’s version of the convertible bed because the crib and toddler’s mattress are the same sizes. Moreover, some models of convertible cribs can transform into full-size beds. Definitely a great option to save money for other essential purchases.

Takeaway

Round cribs are definitely an excellent choice when you want to create a unique nursery decor. You’ll be spending hours each day in your baby’s room. Being proud of the nest you made for your little bundle of love is important.

Therefore, I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t get that round crib you want. A round crib presents the same value for your money as a rectangle crib. But on top of that, they are the most beautiful category of baby cribs.

In general, cribs don’t come with a mattress, and you should consider ordering one simultaneously as the bed.
